WHAT: Abstraction and Reality aims to raise awareness of various societal and environmental issues, and to support the creation and culture in raising consciousness and in ongoing climate changes.
The environment that we live in is not independent of social and economic ones. It is now also fraught with rising concerns: decline and degradation, loss of biodiversity, global warming, resource depletion, scarcity and water pollution, pollution and rising sea levels, migration of species, damage to the landscape, soil erosion, quality and quantity of food or energy. These are but a few of the problems facing the world currently.
In his work entitled Abstraction and Reality, Arnaud Humbert devotes himself to a subtle game, playing with what he sees through his lens and what the Nature imposes upon him. His goals are to capture the movement, the light, the pattern among other, hoping to see Reality reappearing as in a dream, and to create emotion.
The pictorial impact of his shots, taken from all over the world, is reinforced by the use of the square format and the canvas. These prints can be seen as many windows opened beyond the object, offering a new vision of Nature. Shapes become blurred, frontiers between objects dissolve, volumes appear uncertain. The landscape becomes mysterious.
This new perception modifies the understanding, the myths, the story of what connects humans to nature. The GREEN issue is today at the centre of government all over the world, and is particularly thought about within the UAE. The exhibition doesn’t portray consequences of these changes but captures what on earth remains untouched and needs to be preserved. These moments describes moment of serenity, virgin territories, but more importantly moment of harmony between nature and human being.

The teacher is Saleh Al Shukairi, a member of the Omani Society for Fine Arts, where he is one of the founders and active participant of the Calligraphy Club and the Youth Studio. Saleh has exhibited internationally, notably in Germany, Pakistan, South Korea, Washington DC - USA and the UAE, and the 11th Asian Art Biennale in Bangladesh he received an "Honorary Award". He has participated in all calligraphy workshops in Oman since 1993, the largest painting in the world the Muscat Festival in 2000 and in Sharjah 2009 and in the Folk Festival organized by the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC, USA, in 2005.

WHAT: An exhibition of 'festive' mixed-media works by Nargess Hashemi.
This is Iranian artist Nargess Hashemi’s second solo show in Dubai and marks a departure from her previous exhibition at B21, ‘Stories From the Boudoir’. Here Hashemi focuses on the dual feelings of endearment and frustration she has for her family, something most of us can relate to.
Viewers are presented with scenes of familial galleries which Hashemi has photographed over the year and recreated in the form of black line drawings. These drawings are executed on transparent paper which is then overlayed on a background of decorative wallpaper. A sense of sentimental romance is brought to the graphic drawings, but it is also very kitsch, a tradition she feels her family and many other Iranian families are embedded in.
When these banal scenes of gatherings and engagement parties are placed in the socio-political context of the periods they are depicting – many scenes were photographed during the run up to the mass uprisings in Iran in the summer of 2009- the works take on a darker subtext. We are presented with family scenes dislocated from the world they inhabit. Hashemi offers art which documents families anaesthetized from reality by family tradition; the artist is perhaps asking us to consider whether or not we are dodging our social responsibility by immersing ourself in the placating blanket of custom.

Hussein Madi, painter, sculptor and printmaker, is considered among the Arab world’s foremost artists. He was born in 1938 in Chebaa, Lebanon. Between 1973-1986, he divided his time between Rome and Beirut. In 1986, he decided to stay permanently in Beirut.

Ritual Imprint

WHAT: Pouran Jinchi has her second solo show at The Third Line with ‘Ritual Imprint’. Jinchi incorporates delicately crafted drawings of patterned textures and traditional calligraphy with Islamic geometric design to form a series of new works detailing the implications of prayer and ritual.
She trained as a calligrapher in Mashad, Iran, and now incorporates the traditional elements of her culture and her uses her skill in calligraphy to investigate visual manifestations of her faith. This series of drawings pursues a specific artistic question: to imagine a form for prayer. These drawings act as maps of faith. Like the patterns and habits of everyday life, their circular and rhythmic motifs are the result of forms repeated over time.
The drawings are created by Jinchi scratching charcoal on thin paper over prayer tablets (mohr) in order to reproduce an imprint of the textured surface. She then outlines the forms with pencil and text, emphasizing the detail. Through repeating the forms, new designs begin to emerge, recreating the ornate surface of the Mohr. This series is made up of a selection of drawings comprised of geometric shapes found in Islamic art, usually circles and rectangles, structured in such a way that the same shape is used over and over again but in various sizes and angles to create a larger and more detailed work. The replicating motifs add separate layers to existing shapes resulting in a work of meditative calmness, much like the act of prayer.
